Theisen's: A Legacy of Commitment and Community

Since 1927, the Theisen family has been dedicated to meeting the needs of our customers. What began as Theisen’s Battery & Electric on 8th Street in Dubuque, Iowa, has evolved into a dominant regional retailer with 24 stores across Iowa and Wisconsin. Founded by Leo and Kathryn Theisen, the original two-story brick building on 8th Street initially sold only two items: batteries and tires. As customer needs changed, our selection expanded, but our commitment to serving our customers remained unwavering.

By prioritizing our customers and adapting to their needs, Theisen's successfully navigated the challenges of The Great Depression and World War II. We understand that our longevity is owed to our customers and communities, and we believe that our growth should benefit those around us.

Theisen’s Three Pillars of Promise

  1. Customer First: Our dedication to our customers has always been our top priority. We strive to provide exceptional customer service with every interaction, ensuring that our customers' needs are met with the utmost care and attention.
  2. One Connected Team: We believe in the power of teamwork and collaboration. Our success is driven by the collective efforts of our associates, who work together to create a supportive and efficient environment for both our customers and each other.
  3. We Give Back: Supporting our communities is at the heart of what we do. Over the years, Theisen’s has supported over 500 non-profit organizations, including FFA, 4-H, Toys for Tots, The Boys & Girls Club, United Way, Habitat for Humanity, county fairs, educational programs, and local parishes. In 2012, we established the More for You Grant Program to help serve the basic needs of the communities we call home. To date, this program has donated over $3.5 million to support local communities.

A Tradition of Growth and Service

From our beginnings on 8th Street in Dubuque to becoming a dominant regional retailer with 24 stores, the Theisen family has remained committed to exceptional customer service. Founders Leo and Kathryn were followed by their son Jim, who played a pivotal role in bringing our stores to new communities. In 1987, Jim’s sons, Chris and Tony, joined the business, continuing the family’s dedication to community and growth, and expanding Theisen’s from 8 stores to 24.

Today, Theisen’s is supported by four generations. Third-generation owner Chris Theisen served as President and CEO from 2020 – 2024. Tony Theisen is currently serving as President and CEO. As our family business approaches its 100-year anniversary, we remain steadfast in our values that have driven our success throughout our history.

Thank you for being a part of Theisen’s legacy. We look forward to continuing to serve you and our communities with the same dedication and care that have defined us since 1927.
